“Milk casein” fiber was used in many garments and household items in America and Europe during the 1930s and ’40s. It’s made using a process that is similar to rayon/viscose (derived from wood pulp), but because it’s a regenerated protein fiber, it reacts like wool. Historically, it was used as a wool-alternative, advantaging soldiers on the front lines in times of wool scarcity. However, it fell out of use after WWII ended and newer, cheaper synthetics such as nylon grew in popularity. The cotton/milky fabric improves skin comfort, moisture absorption and is naturally antibacterial. WOOL FOR A LIFETIME A boiled wool sweater, hat, or sock is produced in the same traditional method that has been used for centuries in Austria – advantaging outdoor enthusiasts with its timeless warmth. Boiled wool is not only derived from an all-natural source, but it is also manufactured without added chemicals and remains 100% recyclable. Naturally, wool offers at least 10% more breathability to the wearer when compared to other performance-oriented materials derived from synthetics. Wool is naturally water resistant and windproof when made via the boiled wool method. Even when wet, wool continued to insulate, unlike down-filled insulating layers.
